Fela Anikulapo Kuti 15 October 1938 2 August 1997 was a Nigerian multi-instrumentalist, musician, composer, pioneer of the Afrobeat music genre and human rights activist. At the height of his popularity, he was referred to as one of Africa's most challenging and charismatic music performers. Fela was born Olufela Olusegun Oludotun Ransome-Kuti on 15 October 1938 in Abeokuta, the modern-day capital of Ogun State in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, then a city in the British Colony of Nigeria. The set collects the Koola Lobitos discography over three CDs and 39 tracks and was compiled by chemistry professor and African music blogger Toshiya Endo for its original Japanese release in 2005. The group's mid-60s self-titled debut album opens with 'Signature Tune', a short, sharp blast of percussion-led brass that leads into 'Highlife Time', which provides a statement of intent as Fela introduces the music that's got the beat. You get a feel for how the group could ignite a dancefloor, as the group's highlife rhythms fuse with Fela's jazz licks on the trumpet, inspired by Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Dizzy Gillespie. THE story of Fela Kuti the musician is commonly documented as beginning in the late 1960s, after the young Nigerian's exposure to America's Black Power movement, and the germination of the music that came to be known as Afro-beat.
