Madama Butterfly IPA: Madam Butterfly is an opera in three acts originally two by Giacomo Puccini, with an Italian libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa. It is based on the short story Madame Butterfly 1898 by John Luther Long, which in turn was based on stories told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll and on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti. Long's version was dramatized by David Belasco as the one-act play Madame. Opera excerpts sung in Italian. Unnamed soloists, chorus and orchestra. Although he wrote only twelve operas, Puccini's works dominate the operatic stage, particularly in the United States, where, according to Opera America, Madama Butterfly and La Bohème are the two most frequently performed operas respectively, with Tosca being eighth and Turandot being twelfth on the same list. Puccini's 1896 opera La Boheme makes a good companion to Madame Butterfly, tells the tale of a doomed love between a poet and a seamstress many consider La Boheme Puccini's greatest opera.
