It is based on the short story Madame Butterfly 1898 by John Luther Long, which in turn was based on stories told to Long by his sister Jennie Correll and on the semi-autobiographical 1887 French novel Madame Chrysanthème by Pierre Loti. Long's version was dramatized by David Belasco as the one-act play Madame. Madama Butterfly Madame Butterfly, opera: Act I: Love duet. by André KostelanetzColumbia Symphony Orchestra. This is a wonderful CD in good sound from Sony. Kostelanetz was a master at this kind of album - I loved his stuff when I was a kid and it all really holds up very well. There's the MCA set of Puccini Without Words - that's very nice but doesn't come anywhere near Kostelanetz. If you love the Puccini melodies I think you'll really enjoy this disc and the price is certainly right. Guitar Town Music. Born into a family of musicians and composers, Puccini became the leading Italian opera composer of his generation. Although most of his works focused on tragedy the heroine dies in bohème and Butterfly, and in Tosca both the hero and heroine as well as their nemesis die, he also produced a popular comedy, Gianni Schicci. He died before completing his final opera, Turandot, which was subsequently finished by Alfano, and premiered at La Scala in 1926. Puccini's Life
