Its plot follows a lonely, psychotic young man who kidnaps a female art student in London and holds her captive in the cellar of his rural farmhouse. Divided in two sections, the novel contains both the perspective of the captor, Frederick, as well as that of Miranda, the captive. The portion of the novel told from Miranda's perspective is presented in epistolary form. John Robert Fowles faʊlz 31 March 1926 5 November 2005 was an English novelist of international renown, critically positioned between modernism and postmodernism. His work was influenced by Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus, among others. After leaving Oxford University, Fowles taught English at a school on the Greek island of Spetses, a sojourn that inspired The Magus, an instant best-seller that was directly in tune with 1960s hippy anarchism and experimental philosophy. He was most popular in the late 1960s, 1970s and early 1980s, and he was best known in New Zealand for his song from 1970, Cheryl Moana Marie, which he had written about his younger sister. Rowles was born in Whakatane, New Zealand, and is part Māori. His father, Eddie Hohapata Rowles, played for the 1938 Māori All Blacks. His mother was European. He was brought up in Kawerau, in the North Island of New Zealand. John Fowles was born at Leighton-on-Sea, Essex in 1926, where he lived until the outbreak of the Second World War. He was educated at Bedford School and New College, Oxford, where he read French and German. After graduating he taught English at the University of Poitiers and then at the Anagyriou School at Spetses. John Fowles lived in Lyme Regis in Dorset on the south coast of England and was for a period curator of the local museum.
