Louis Armstrong 19011971, nicknamed Satchmo or Pops, was an American trumpeter, composer, singer and occasional actor who was one of the most influential figures in jazz and in all of American popular music. His career spanned five decades, from the 1920s to the 1960s, and different eras in jazz. Coming to prominence in the 1920s as an inventive trumpet and cornet player, Armstrong was a foundational influence in jazz, shifting the focus of the music from collective improvisation to solo. Twenty-three of Louis Armstrong's early big-band performances have been reissued complete and in chronological order on the sixth CD in this very valuable Columbia series. Armstrong, whose virtuosity and showmanship by the late 1920s could no longer be confined to a New Orleans jazz format, is heard supported by several different big bands including Luis Russell's Orchestra on these classic recordings. And while trombonist J. Higginbotham, clarinetist Albert Nicholas, and drummer Lionel Hampton are in the supporting cast, they are completely overshadowed by the leader.
